A candidates’ forum for the March 8 city council election has been scheduled for Sunday, February 13.
The Temple City Voice and Temple City High School Junior State of America (JSA) will co-sponsor the program, which will feature all six candidates running for a seat on the City Council.
“The purpose is for the people of Temple City, both students and voters, to get to know the candidates, as well as [for] a meaningful political discussion to occur,” says Mark Lamb, Vice President of JSA.
Temple City Voice Editor-in-Chief Jason Wu agrees.
“[We hope] what they see at the forum will help them better formulate which candidate they would like to vote for in the election in March,” he says.
The candidates’ forum will take place at the Live Oak Park Community Center from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. This event is open to the public.
“We are hoping for Temple City High School students as well as adult voters to come,” Lamb says.
The doors will open to the public at 2:45 p.m.
According to both Lamb and Wu, all six candidates will attend the event.
The candidates are Mayor Fernando Vizcarra, Councilman Carl Blum, Councilman Cynthia Sternquist, Planning Commissioner Manuel Valenzuela, Starene Cruse, and Nicholas Lisk.
This forum will be the fourth one organized by both the JSA and the Voice. Since 2007, both student-run organizations have held candidate forums for local City Council and School Board elections.
A separate candidates’ forum, sponsored by the Temple City Chamber of Commerce will take place on Wednesday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m.
