Restaurant Review: Kang Kang Food Court is Sure to Please

The new Kang Kang Food Court is an inexpensive restaurant close to home.

Kang Kang Food Court is one of the newest restaurants in Temple City to just open and its authenticity and taste are sure not to disappoint.

Walking in, the first inclination you would have is that it looks more like a normal restaurant than a food court. There is just one place to order your food instead of several. What makes this place a “food court” of sorts is that it caters food from regions of China and also Taiwan known extensively for its cuisine.

The environment is nice and peaceful for a “food court” themed restaurant. It is relatively clean and large, with two television sets displaying some of the near 200 dishes they serve. The place is nice and quiet, unlike the bustling and hectic environment at several Chinese restaurants.

Up at the counter, there are frozen and refrigerated foods such as buns and dishes to buy to take home. Most of the counter is taken up with simmering containers of Chinese fast food dishes to order, usually as fast food, Panda Express-styled. This array of food is less oily and greasy than Panda Express and also a lot cheaper.

Where you pay five dollars there for one entrée and one side, you can get four items with steamed rice and soup for the same price. This type of food seems to be much more popular than their other array of dishes, but the dish names are absent and the food do not look too appetizing at first glance, so you may have to take the time to inquire on what dish perks your interest. Nevertheless, it’s still quite tasty.

The larger portion of the menu isn’t fast food. You have an incredibly large selection of food options, from dumplings to buns, from noodles to fried rice, all from Taiwan, Northern, Eastern, and Southern China, and Hong Kong and the other parts of Asia.

Personally, I found the dishes from the Southern Chinese/Hong Kong region to be a bit too salty (they list the foods under their respective regions), such as the Singapore-styled fried rice noodle, and did not care of it as much as the other regional dishes. It may be because of the style of taste indigenous to the region, but also, the Northern Chinese dishes happen to have a more “home-styled” and balanced taste, just like it is said to have. It could be that these styles are augmented to further difference the different foods from their regions.

What really caught my attention was their “House Specialties” menu with their Beef Stew Noodle. The order will arrive in a ridiculously huge bowl that can easily satisfy two people. The beef is tender and isn’t overcooked, but there are a lot of tendon chunks floating around and the soup has a nice kick to it, but is still very balanced in flavor.

Unlike most Chinese restaurants which stretch the food supply by “puffing” beef with baking soda in an effort to save money, the restaurant lacks this puffed beef and you can tell that it is regular beef.

My conclusion is that this restaurant is of the high-quality mark. I can tell that the food is wholesome and the environment itself is warm and inviting. With such a great find in the heart of Temple City, you can save money and just stick to food close to home.

    I guess the cooks of Kang Kang Food Court do not know how to prepare the Southern China Cusine if it is salty. In Southern China people tend to use more fresh seafood like shrimp, crab and fish with season vegetable; in addition to, it also uses the chicken, beef and pork daily. For example, tomato with eggs, boccoli with beef, rosted duck and BBQ pork are some of the Southern China dish. The taste usually is light and less salty than the Northern China Cusine.
